Metro Gel Number Plate Letters Regulations

Originally, the Metro Font was a design to be used in Northern Ireland for their standard plates, however, this was officially ended when the DVLA changed the rules making Northern Ireland use the UK Standard Charles Wright font only, meaning that the Metro font is technically illegal throughout the UK.

However, there seems to have been a change in the mood in Northern Ireland and most MOT stations appear happy to still accept this font on vehicles in the area.

At Dash Dynamics, we do not advise the Metro Digits to be used to make Mainland UK plates, as these do not comply with the rules, and users may find themselves being stopped by some police officers (and possibly fined too).

Dash Dynamics produces the Metro 3D gel letters and digits in two sizes, with 50mm and 60mm Heights. The general shape of both these Gel digits is identical, as the two digits are exact scale versions of each other.

We have a large number of customers in the Republic of Ireland who request this font for local plates, but please note that the Metro font is not made to comply with the Republic of Ireland’s specifications as it is not of the required size of 70 x 36mm.

This is again supported by our Jig systems, but here you can choose either 50 mm or 60 mm number plate jigs, or even both types at the same time. With this Metro Jig system, the only difference is the insert sizes.

Please note that our profiles will not line up with either printed or other manufacturers’ Metro styles as they have been designed so we could manufacture our jig systems to work correctly. As the font is not officially legal in the UK, our jig spaces the digits differently to the UK 11mm spacing standards.

Gel Hyphens, Gaelic County badges and IRL Euro End badges are available to support our offer, where we produce a specifically designed font, sized 70 x 36mm, with a stroke size of 10mm, which complies with the laid-out sizes.

To help our clients, we only charge a small extra price to add the second set of inserts to produce a complete kit for both 50 and 60-mm styles. You also have the option to add the second set of inserts later should you later wish to start offering both sizes at the same lower add-on price, as initially buying together.

Special note for Republic of Ireland Customers

We have a large number of customers in the Republic of Ireland who request Metro font for local plates. Whilst we will supply you with these digits, please note that the Metro font is not made to comply with the Republic of Ireland’s statute, S.I. No. 287/1990. It is not of the locally required digit size of 70 x 36mm, which we also manufacture.

Gel Hyphens, Gaelic County badges and IRL Euro End badges are available to support our Republic of Ireland offer, where we produce a specifically designed font, sized 70 x 36mm, with a stroke size of 10mm, which complies with the laid-out sizes.

Jig Systems are available to support the official sized Republic of Ireland Digits for both the 520 x 110mm and 340 x 220mm official sized plates.

For customers in the Republic of Ireland wanting to use our Metro font, we normally advise the use of the 50mm digits size as the layout of plates locally is better suited to this size.

Dash offers different starter packs for the UK and the Republic of Ireland, as the spread of digits used in the Republic is very different to the UK and not all letters are used. The Republic of Ireland pack contains a larger number of digits that is based loosely on the number of times a digit is used by the county.
